As well as catering to all the nutritional and medical requirements of the children, we strive to make their stay
at iThemba House as positive and fun-filled as possible.
The Home is filled with toys, puzzles, cuddly teddies and dolls, which the children have access to at all times
in their bedrooms and in the lounge/playroom, which has been set up in a child friendly and safe manner. The toys
have been separated into age-appropriate categories, ranging from purely fun activities to educational games and puzzles.
Apart from the volunteers who come to the house to play and read with the children every day, we have also created a
weekly educational routine for the children:
- Once a week an Art teacher comes to spend an hour with the children and teaches them creative expression through drawing, painting and sculpturing.
- Every week we have an hour or two of musical appreciation for the kids, during which they are introduced to various instruments and can learn the benefits of musical expression.
- Drama classes are held for the toddlers and older children, enriching them with self-confidence and providing them with an opportunity to feel safe and have fun in an imaginary, self-created world of magic and dress-up.
- Outings and visits to the beach/museums/movies/etc are undertaken for the children with the trustees of iThemba House regularly.
- Trauma counselling is available for all the children on a regular basis.
